Baptism

What is Baptism?

Baptism is the first sacrament of the Church and the beginning of our life in Christ. Through this beautiful gift of God, we are received into the family of faith, freed from original sin, and called to grow as disciples of Jesus within the Christian community.

Preparation

Our parish is glad to accompany families who wish to baptize their children and take this important first step in their life of faith. Parents and godparents take part in baptismal preparation in order to better understand the meaning of the sacrament and the commitment to raise the child in the Catholic faith.

Requirements

  • Baptism is for children under 7 years of age.
  • Registration must be completed by one of the parents at the parish office.
  • The child’s birth certificate must be presented.
  • Parents must commit to raising their child in the Catholic faith.
  • One godfather and one godmother are permitted (or a single godparent). Godparents must:
    • Be at least 16 years of age.
    • Be Catholics who have received Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation.
    • If married, be married in the Catholic Church.
  • Parents and godparents must attend the pre-baptismal class. If they live outside the area, they may present proof of having completed the preparation at their own parish.
  • On the day of the Baptism, the family must arrive 15 minutes before the celebration begins.
  • At the time of registration, a donation of $100 is requested (cash or check; card payments carry an additional fee). The donation is non-refundable.
